A Great Crowd

I am now well into my fifties and I suppose you could say I have been around Northern Soul since the beginning. But to be honest I am not a Northern soul devotee although I do like some of the records. You see I have been a doorman (bouncer to some) most of my life. I recently quit the work because age is slowing me down and the club goers seem rowdier. When I first found The Night Owl Club a lot of very fond memories came back to me. So I thought I would share a few with you.
I was a bit of a Nomad in my younger days and used to travel all over the North West looking for work in clubs. I remember when Northern Soul first started being played. It was a real suprise to see the dance floor packed with mainly men. Some of those blokes and women could really move! I remember seeing one lad run up the wall, do a somersault, land in the splits then carry on dancing!! Up until then we had only seen couples smooching together and now we had a dancefloor full of Gene Kelly's. I have seen a lot of different fashions and dancing styles over the years but none of them can compare to those 'gymnasts'.
When ever a Northern Soul night was on you would get 100's of people turning up from all over the North on scooters, in cars and coaches. The places would get packed out. But the most amazing thing was that we never had any trouble. Everyone just enjoyed themselves. We guessed that pills were being popped by some of them. But I never saw it. The only thing I can say about them is that they were a great crowd. Infact we used to argue between ourselves who would work the Northern nights. It was entertaining, even relaxing, like getting paid for nothing.
I read that more and more younger ones are getting into it. Well if that is true and they behave and enjoy life like the old crews I will come out of retirement tomorrow. Thanks for the memories and keep it going in the future.

Yours...Chez
