FIRST STEPS
Before I decided to write my story I mailed Mick. The reason I did
this is because I know very little about Northern Soul and I was a bit concerned that it
would have little impact compared to some of the tales in The Bar. I could not believe his
response. To quote him "JJ if you like this music then join the club. If you listen
to a record and it feels good you are as much part of the scene as the originals. Put your
story together mate and Keep the Faith". So here goes:
I bought an old Jam CD at a sale. I am too young to remember the Jam, but have I liked a
few Paul Weller records and decided to listen to a couple of his older tracks. One of the
tracks was 'Solid bond in your heart'. There was something about it that made me play it
again and again. I was playing it one day when one of my Dad's friends said it sounded
like Northern Soul. He told me that Northern Soul is a type of music with a beat/rhythm
that is a similar to Tamla Motown. I was even more confused as I did not Know what Tamla
Motown was either!.
I was curious, so I decided to look further. After a good search round the record shops I
now own 3 CD's dedicated to Northern soul. Most of the tracks on the CD make me feel good.
My best find is the Home Pages on the Internet dedicated to Northern Soul. I have found
out it is called Northern Soul because it was played in the North of England, that I can
still buy 45rpm records, clubs are still dedicated to playing it and I am not alone with
my love for it.
My ambition is to go to an Allnighter and maybe learn to dance. Well that's my brief
Northern Soul story. I hope I can give you a better one in 20 years time. My favourite
record at the moment is 'What shall I do' by Frankie and the Classicals. I hope you can
add it to this.
Keep the Faith...JJ
